A note from Sharon…

I’ve just returned from a very productive and inspiring trip to Vietnam. It was nice to reconnect with our producers.

While in Hanoi, I had the opportunity to visit a family home in the village, which I’ve not had time to do before.  After visiting the family altar and refreshing the yellow chrysanthemums, which were his mother’s favorite flower, we had tea

and a traditional guest lunch, with special dishes. We visited all the brothers, who each have a connection to the work we do there, and the chicken and pig farm…  in Vietnam, it is rare if everyone in the family does not have a role in whatever the business is.

More impacting than the 100 year old home, was the warmth and kindness of the family that I visited for the day…

With my friend Thiep, a talented Vietnamese designer, I was able to visit the old style Vietnam and was so impressed with the colors and textures of the countryside.

There is so much exciting development and change happening in Ho Chi Minh City that it seems like warp speed.

Several of the young people that I met while out sourcing were young children when we lived there…1996 seemed long ago!  Lots of creative energy in the city and interesting design mix with traditional skills of embroidery, crochet, silk and fiber weaving.  I was fortunate to have a chance to see some old friends at the Operation Smile event which raised a generous amount of money for the next medical event in the Southern province.IMG_1599

I made some wonderful new connections and extended my stay a week to be able to meet up with several new groups for us, from Cambodia and Laos.IMG_1462 We will be bringing lots of the new things from this trip to the TNNA Booth in Columbus, and look forward to seeing many of you there. In the meantime, stay tuned, as there are new and exciting developments to our website!

Spring 2013 in Vietnam

Sharon Woodcock, our creative director, has just begun a two-month long working trip in Vietnam.  She’ll be scouting new materials and working on new product designs with our producing groups there. Follow her travels by checking our photo gallery as we periodically add photos she sends us.

We’ve thought about it for years and we’ve decided it’s due time for a Lantern Moon Retreat!

We decided to kick it off on the next International Women’s Day, which fittingly celebrates woman and their achievements around the world. It is important to us to acknowledge and celebrate the skilled women who participate in the groups we work with in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bali; places where modern conveniences are rare, work ethic is strong, and artisan skill is the fabric of their communities.  We both admire, and strive to support, these women. It’s also important to us to celebrate those who make a difference in the lives of these hardworking women by purchasing Lantern Moon goods.

So, please celebrate with us, take some time for your creative passion, and enjoy a true NW experience. The retreat will be a super special extended weekend March 8-11th, 2013, beginning at McMenamins Kennedy School in Portland with a reception to meet our local authors and designers and then a voucher to shop at the LM warehouse  just down the road. It continues in scenic Stevenson, Washington in the Columbia Gorge. Here, our guests will be treated to a 3-night stay at the beautiful Skamania Lodge on the Columbia River, with all-inclusive NW cuisine, classes with the wonderful Nicky Epstein, a spa treatment of choice, and lots of free time to spend as desired!

The Lantern Moon crew has been busy since our return from TNNA in Columbus, Ohio! It is always nice to reconnect with our old friends there and exciting to meet new store owners and make new acquaintances as well.

Jeni Hewlett, the UK designer and owner of Fyberspates joined us again in the booth, contributing lots of yarn knowledge and good humor! We love having Jeni with us and she brought several new colors of her beautiful Scrumptious yarn.

We auditioned a new orientation of the Booth using both sides of the aisle and everyone agreed that it was a great change. We displayed our entire inventory of products (no easy feat), unveiled new shades of Scrumptious yarn (which will be available this Fall) and introduced three new exclusive Lantern Moon Collection designs in Scrumptious yarn!

This Show was bird nest themed, with adorable birds perched atop Vietnamese bamboo cages. The cages housed breathtakingly beautiful knitted bird nests, created over a month of Saturdays in Portland and inspired by creative talent Marilyn Horn, Charlotte Key, and our own Cathy and Sharon Woodcock. Embellished with beads, fluff and feathers they each became fantastic tributes to nature!

Knitted Nests

Knitted Nests

You too can have a nest for Spring! We had such a great time knitting these nests that it was decided to incorporate the activity as a workshop at our first Lantern Moon Retreat. Save the date March 8-11…it’s a spa event –More about that soon!

Joel & Steven B

Joel & Steven B

Always a treat to see our friend, the ever creative StevenBe from Yarn Garage in Minnesota. Steven’s mom Christa is a delight and we were glad to see her at TNNA… Jeremy was darling in his bow tie!

Our new American designer patterns in Scrumptious were displayed on the main aisle. The booth was spacious and very look able.

Booth 2

We highlighted our exposure in Martha Stewart Living and also the gorgeous hanging nest that Marilyn Horn created, up in front. The bird cages were perfect and added interest, without taking away from our product showing.

Writing Orders

Jeni, Cathy and our rep Wayne writing orders.

We always enjoy seeing our reps in the Booth and they always have great feedback from being out on the road for us. Thank you Wayne, Jan, and Linda  for helping out!  … and while we’re at it, an additional thanks to Laura from Jimmy Beans, who came to our rescue with lunch on Setup Day!

Ysolda on her bike

Ysolda always brings a smile, great energy and lots of wonderful ideas to the Show!

And that’s a wrap. It seems to all be over too soon…

Packing up...

See you next time TNNA!

TNNA wrapup

Our new Fyberspates Scrumptious yarn line received a warm welcome at the show! It was a great chance for shops to see what all the buzz is about. Jeni Hewlett from Fyberspates spent time with the Lantern Moonies in the booth. Here she is on the left, and also the visiting Ravelry peeps and Ysolda.

The Scrumptious yarn line has great pattern support. We showed off the Scrumptious books, including the just coming out books Saturday Treat by Ysolda, Scrumptious Knits bhy Carol Feller, and the Scrumptious Baby Collection.

We also had a nice twitter buzz going about our new keychain clutch wallets. So cute! Thanks to @craftyeditor for getting the ball rolling with a picture on twitter!

One more picture from Kristin Omdahl’s book signing…

That’s a wrap!

Here’s our beautiful booth! #938, come say howdy if you’re in the area.

Mmmm, scrumptious Fyberspates Scrumptious!

Ysolda came to sign copies of her new book, Saturday Treat, featuring her specially chosen colors of Scrumptious yarn.

And Kristin Omdahl came to sign copies of her new book, Seamless Crochet.

I love that the person on the far left has our new Bali Weekender bag. I have one, too, and it’s my absolute favorite. Lots of room, but it’s not bulky. It has a laptop compartment, lots of organizing pockets, and room for lots of knitting!

Both Kristin (11-noon) and Ysolda (1:30-2:30) will be back tomorrow (Sunday) for more book signing. Come say hello!

Today’s photos courtesy of Steve Ham. Thanks, Steve!

Yarn bar #tnna

Our lovely needles are at the Berroco Yarn Bar at TNNA. You can sample our Featherlights, ebony, and rosewood needles there, or come by the Lantern Moon booth (#938)!

(I love this clever display. Belly up to the bar and place your order!)

More fun! Kristin Omdahl will be our guest in the Lantern Moon booth (#938) at TNNA on Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to noon.

Kristin is a designer and the author of several knitting and crochet collections, including “A Knitting Wrapsody” and “Crochet So Fine.” She’s bringing copies of her new book, Seamless Crochet, to sign for the lucky first 30 visitors each day (60 books total). She’ll also have some beautiful crocheted garments to show you.

Join as you go? No ends to work in at the end? Sounds like a perfect idea!

I stopped at the Lantern Moon office yesterday to pick up a needle (16 inch ebony circular, size 3, if you must know) for a design project. The office was a quietly humming beehive of TNNA prep. Adding Fyberspates Scrumptious to our product line means adding more fun!

Steve showed me the Scrumptious knit samples that they are taking to the show. These are from the upcoming book, Scrumptious Knits by Carol Feller. It’s due out any minute…

I didn’t have a camera with me, so I’m borrowing pictures from Carol herself. Pictures are copyright Joseph Feller. Thank you!

I love the shaping on Ignus; it was really apparent when I held up the garment. This sample is knit in Scrumptious Aran in Teal. The cable down the side is exquisite.

The beads on Flama were a surprise! They’re across the bottom of the lacy portion, and they add just the right amount of sparkle and weight. This sits very comfortably on the shoulders. Flama is knit in Scrumptious Lace.

This Bakersville cardi is lightweight and comfortable. It’s knit with Scrumptious 4-ply/sport in Slate. It would be perfect for spring.

But my favorite item? Taupo. It’s knit with Scrumptious Chunky in Cherry, a single, and the construction is very clever. The Trinity stitch edging continues around to go up the front edges, and the sweater closes with one button at the neck. The color is so rich, and it looks smashing on me. (I love samples; when they make me look good, they make me want to knit!) I don’t have a picture of the front, but you can see it on the Fyberspates page for this book.

Lantern Moon is the exclusive USA distributor for Fyberspates Scrumptious yarn, and we distribute the Fyberspates Scrumptious books, too. Stop by the booth (#938) at TNNA and see the scrumptious yarn and more samples!

What do *you* want to knit with Scrumptious?

The Lantern Moon crew is gearing up to head to Phoenix for the Winter Trade Show of The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA). We’ll be in booth 938. Come see us and our lovely products! You can see our new yarn line, Fyberspates Scrumptious.

We will also have a very special guest in the booth. Ysolda will be there on Saturday and Sunday from 1:30-2:30 each day, signing her new book, Saturday Treat. We’ll have copies for the lucky first 50 visitors per day during Ysolda’s visits (100 total, 1 per store). The book has six luscious designs in six colors specially selected by Ysolda herself. Here are a few images from the book.
