…are coming!
These are two our new Portrait Series Sheep Cards which will be available in March. They will be sold in sets of five assorted cards. Ashland, Oregon illustrator Michael Arciniega created these beautiful pencil illustrations of sheep exclusively for Lantern Moon.
What do you think of them? I like how the artist captured the personalities of these sheep…
Do you use greeting cards? Are you more likely to use realistic representations like those above, or the whimsical ones below? Or any at all?

Let me know your thoughts. I’ll send a packet of cards and a sheep tape measure to a randomly selected commenter. I’m also putting this on our Facebook page and Ravelry group; you can comment on those, too, and have extra chances to win. There will be three winners, one from each venue. One comment per blog/Facebook, but I’d like a discussion on Ravelry so I don’t want to place a limit there. It’s an adventure!
Edited to add: I’ll take comments until Midnight Sunday/Monday (ish), and choose a winner at random on Monday sometime. Good luck! And thanks so much for your comments; they are very helpful to us.

I’ve fallen out of the habit of using greeting cards, but both sets you showed would tempt me back to writing!
I love the one with the hair!!
I love to use greeting cards whenever possible. And nowadays, it’s always a nice surprise to get one! I love both sets of those cards! Usually the design I pick depends on to whom I’m sending.
I’m terrible about sending cards. So bad, in fact, that I’ve pretty much given up on it entirely.
This artist is amazing! The sheep look so real. Loving the one on the left.
The whimsical ones are really cute, but the realistic ones are so well done!
love the cards ~ especially the pencil drawings. Beautiful.
I really like the whimsical cards. I still do send “old fashioned” cards in snail mail. I think it is more personal than e-mail. Doesn’t everyone love to get a letter in the mail that isn’t junk mail?
I love the whimsical cards. I would love to send those to my knitting friends.
My best friend and I still write letters using the good old fashioned postal system, and most of the time the letters are sent with cards. I really like the sheep pencil drawings, but I’m old fashioned. I love to draw too, and these are really inspiring.
I actually still write people. I like using cards that are either from a place I’ve been or are fun. The lower sheep cards are definitely fun. I really like them, and I would write letters to my grandmother on them. (She is also a knitter.)
I love the whimsical cards – they really brighten my day -
I love the pencil drawings, but for sending cards I would probably choose the whimsical designs. For me, the pencil drawings would be lovely on the folder I keep my patterns in or something like that. They are beautiful.
Love both sets of cards! If I had to pick, I’d say I like the realistic ones better.
I love the whimsical sheep. I still write to my aunt in PA and my cousin in NJ because neither have become e-mail junkies. Somehow, it’s a nice change from typing.
They are both great. The whimsical sheep could be sent to anyone because they are cute. The realistic sheep would be reserved for my knitter friends.
Cards are special touches. I don’t do them a lot but when I do, I’d want one that looks like the real deal. It’s making a visual statement while I make the written one.
I would totally use both types. The pencil drawings are beautiful and have uses for both knitters and nonknitters. The whimsical ones work for both fun friends and kids as well. Very cool, and very excited to get some! Since all my family and most close friends live far away, I still like to do random cards in the mail every so often, just because. So yay!
Love the Portrait Series Sheep Cards! Since we herd sheep with our border collies these would be perfect. Would send them to friends that have the same interest!!! They are great!
I would use both types, depending on who I was sending it to and why. Both styles are compelling and I think that whoever I sent them to would enjoy them.
Like others have said, it depends on who the recipient is whether I’d choose the realistic or the whimsical, but if I could only have one, I’d have to go with the realistic one on the left — I love the fleece covering her eyes.
I send cards all the time. Mostly as Thank You’s, but I also try to send the occasional Thinking of You-type greetings. It’s so fun to get personal mail these days!
I prefer the cartoon sheep, here.
Good questions! I don’t use greeting cards too often anymore, but I think I would use the realistic cards as care instruction cards for the knitted gifts I give people.
I use greeting cards sometimes. I’d be far more likely to use the new portrait series – the whimsical ones aren’t nearly as appealing to me.
I like greeting cards! I usually put in a card with swap packages (I have participated in quite a few ravelry swaps). I generally choose more whimsical cards, but the sheep drawings are pretty cool… I think my choice of card would depend on who I was sending it to.
I use lots of cards and I would use both types….The realistic ones I’d probably send to more “yarny” friends and the whimisical I could use for anyone, cuz they are cute and funny. I collect sheep, so I’d be drawn to these cards.
I like the more realistic ones. And tape measures! The boys are major fans of them too!
I’ve got to say, I like both!
Love the sheep cards!
I love sending cards to friends!
I love the new knitting cards because they are realistic. I do write letters & post cards because it is nice to have hand written mail.My friends love when I send cards.I most always receive a response.I think the new cards & the whimsical ones are needed because a lot of people do not know where wool yarns come from.I am often asked which animal does yarn come from.
I write many cards and love to receive them …. always looking for cards that support my habit! Sweet cards ~
I like both styles of cards. Some friends are more appreciative of artwork than others and besides, sometimes you have to feed your whimsy side! I love writing cards! Who doesn’t like getting personal mail in their mailbox!
My vote – whimsical due to vibrant colour and cuteness. They make me smile. For me, it’s email or nothing these days.
The sheep cards are adorable and perfect for yarn lovers!
I do like to send note cards (or postcards) to my grandsons. They love getting snail mail! They love animals so I know they would love the realistic ones as much as I do.
I love the whimsical ones – I use note cards to write thank you notes.
The whimsical ones are cute, but I really like the realistic versions better. I also think the sheep tape measures are pretty cute.
The realistic ones make me think of my Grandma, who always had lovely notecards with drawings of places and things that were important to her. But alas, I am not her, and am more likely to use the sillier ones, as most of the people I “note” to are non-knitters, and would therefore be confused by the sheep-as-object-of-affection. The are really lovely.
I like the whimsical, cartoony looking sheep ones. They’re fun. And if you’re going to send someone a sheep card, you’d better be trying to make them smile.
